Do I have a misstrike or error?

I was going through a coin collection inherited from an estate and came accross an 1860 Indian head coin that appears to have a connection between the upper and lower extensions of the letter E on CENT. It makes the E appear to be a very definite U. I hesitate to post a picture for fear of appearing obscene. Could this be a genuine error or has this coin been tampered with? It appears to be of the same material and wear as the rest of the coin.
