: I was going through a coin collection inherited from an estate and came accross an 1860 Indian head coin that appears to have a connection between the upper and lower extensions of the letter E on CENT. It makes the E appear to be a very definite U. I hesitate to post a picture for fear of appearing obscene. Could this be a genuine error or has this coin been tampered with? It appears to be of the same material and wear as the rest of the coin.
It is an altered coin. These are more commonly seen on US large cents which are pure copper and easier to tool.
If you have a magnifier of some type you can probably see the tooling marks where the coin was altered.
