To chime in a bit more, these coins got their name because they originally were made mostly by hobos as a way of earning some extra money. Indian Head(*) nickels were especially popular because the strong and relatively simple design allowed for a lot of creativity, esp. by people with limited access to metal-carving tools. For obvious reasons the art form was most prevalent during the Great Depression - those are the originals Coulport referred to.

(*) FWIW the coin is called either an Indian Head or Buffalo nickel, rather than "Buffalo Head". After all, it shows the whole buffalo, LOL!


: I have a 1928 buffalo head nickel that has a man with a beard and crown on the opposite side. When I look for information on this coin, everything I read says all nickels during this period had an Indian head. Is this a counterfeit or something of interest?
