The 1804 dollar is one of the classic American rarities, on a par with the 1933 penny struck on your side of the pond. Interestingly, none of the various varieties of Mint-issue 1804 dollars were actually struck that year; there's more information at the link below.
You're absolutely correct to suspect that the coin is a fake, because all known mint issues are accounted for. Over the last couple of decades the market has been flooded with counterfeit dollar pieces, mostly made in the Far East. Some are almost undetectably good while others are laughable, with impossible dates and/or designs.
You can always ask an expert in U.S. coins to take a look at your dollar, but I'm 99.999% certain it will turn out to be a copy.
: Hello Coin Club,
: I have recently bought a small collection of coins here in the UK and I am in the process of sorting them out.
: In the collection are a couple of old USA coins. One is an 1827 1c and the other is a large 1804 coin that I think is supposed to be a Dollar.
: I've just started doing some research on the internet on both coins. The search for the 1804 coin is throwing up all sorts of stuff about it being a very rare coin. So I have decided to try and contact coin experts in the USA to find out a bit more.
: I'm guessing I have some kind of copy, but I would appreciate your opinion. Would it be ok to send you a jpeg of the coin?
: Thanks in advance,
