It's made of zinc-plated steel. In decent shape with no pitting or corrosion it'll sell for about 25 or 30 cents retail. Buy price is around a dime to 15 cents. If it's rusted, pitted, or otherwise damaged it has little or no collector value.

Remember, 1943 was the middle of WWII. Copper was needed for ammunition so to conserve metal the Mint made pennies out of scrap steel. They were coated with zinc to reduce corrosion. Unfortunately the coins didn't work out well. When new they were silver in color so people confused them with dimes. Later the zinc oxidized and turned an ugly gray. Some people erroneously concluded the coins were made of lead and wouldn't use them. And when the zinc started to wear off the underlying steel rusted.

By 1944 there was enough copper available in the form of used shell casings that the lowly cent was again struck in bronze.

A few 1943 cents were accidentally struck on bronze blanks, and a few 1944's were made of steel. These are considered quite rare. No genuine ones have been found in decades, although there's a ton of counterfeits out there that still show up occasionally.

: its not copper 1943 and says ONE CENT on back
