To follow up on what Coulport said, the 1804 dollar is arguably the single most counterfeited American coin. The genuine ones were actually struck by the US Mint much later than 1804 - probably around 1834-36 - to create a full set of coins with that date for presentation to the King of Siam. Something like that would be considered illegal / dishonest today but at the time it wasn't unusual.

The beauty and rarity of the coins plus their association with the King of Siam gave them publicity you couldn't buy anywhere ... but counterfeiters have been trying for almost 2 centuries!
